A message to the men in the music industry.
I know some of you are allies to women in this industry.
I’ve been supported by some brilliant men throughout my own career, and I’ve never chosen to speak directly to you here before.
But today, I am.
Because saying you support women is one thing. Actively backing them is another.
When a woman is spoken over in a meeting, speak up.
When someone else takes credit for her work, say her name.
When you see behaviour you know isn’t right, challenge it.
When you have a budget and there are women on your team who would benefit from development or support, make it happen.
Don’t wait for them to ask.
Being an ally isn’t just quietly agreeing that things need to change.
It’s using your voice.
Your position.
Your influence.
Your budget.
84% of senior leaders in the music industry are white men.
That statistic needs to change.
And women cannot change it alone.
We need to work together.
So, to the men in music who already back women: thank you.
And my challenge to you is this:
What else could you do?
Who could you speak up for?
Who could you back?
Who could you invest in?
Actively backing women is how we create change.
And to the men who don’t back women, have never thought about this, or think this is a women’s problem to fix.
Do better.
