FED UP WITH THE SAME OLD LEADERSHIP STYLE IN MUSIC?
What if leadership in music didn’t mean ego or being the loudest in the room?
What if it meant being collaborative, being kind, being supportive; and still being you?
Leading with values instead.
A lot of women I coach hesitate to step into leadership, or even see themselves as leaders.
Often because the leadership they’ve experienced doesn’t look like anything they’d want to step into.
They’ve seen:
– Top-down
– All-talk and ego driven
– About power, not people
– A copy of what’s come before
But what if you didn’t have to lead like that?
What if leadership looked like:
– Protecting your team’s time
– Making space for new voices
– Saying “I don’t know” with confidence
– Choosing collaboration over competition
– Standing firm in your values, even when you’re the only one in the room doing it
This is what I see in my clients every day:
Women redefining leadership in music.
Not waiting for permission.
Not trying to be “like the men at the top.”
But stepping forward as themselves.
And we need more of that. We need more women in leadership. More diversity. More range - because that’s how we challenge what leadership looks like, and what it means.
Leadership isn’t a title. It’s a choice.
The best leaders I see in music are the ones who are deeply human.
They lead with heart.
They lead with purpose.
They know their impact matters, and they want to leave the industry better than they found it.
You don’t have to lead like Emma Banks, Lucy Dickins, Julie Greenwald or Sulinna Ong, to name just a few women leading in music.
They’ve each paved their own path; breaking ground, shifting culture, showing what’s possible.
We can thank them, learn from them, and still choose to do it our own way.
After all, leadership is about trusting your own voice.
You don’t need to wait for a better boss. You get to become the leader you wish you’d had.
But it starts with knowing your values, and coaching can help with that.
One client I worked with recently said,
So, what matters to you?
What do you want to be known for?
What are you no longer willing to compromise?
Your values are your compass.
They help you lead with integrity.
They bring clarity when the noise gets loud.
Because this industry doesn’t just need more women leaders.
It needs leaders who lead with heart.
With courage. With vision.
And who are different than what’s come before.
If your idea of leadership doesn’t match what you’ve seen - good.
It means you’re about to create something new.
The industry needs your kind of leadership.
