SCARED OF PUBLIC SPEAKING? ME TOO.
Would it surprise you if I said I’m scared of public speaking? That I worry my voice might quiver, or I’ll mis-speak, or that no one will even listen?
Well, at the end of this month, I’ll be on my first music industry panel at Brooklyn Public Library: Beyond the Glass Ceiling – Women in the Music 2025.
People have been surprised when I said I’ve never done a panel before. I spent years giving presentations in the music industry, but I’ve realised this: presenting a global brand is very different to standing up and speaking as yourself. When you are the product, and it's your own business, it feels far more vulnerable.
That’s why I signed up for Good Shout's Powerhouse course earlier this year with 💥 Amy Kean 💥. Four weeks of panels, podcasts, roundtables and even poetry. I joined from New York with seven incredible women, and last night in London I finally got to meet two of them in real life. It was magical!
So, if something scares you, but you still want to do it, invest in yourself. Build the skills and find the support: that might be a course, or perhaps coaching.
As women, our voices matter, and sometimes we just need a little help to step into the spotlight. To be more visible. To have an impact.
Here's a reframe that's helping me: instead of telling yourself “I’m not good at public speaking” try “Up until now, I haven’t done any public speaking… but that’s about to change.”
What’s one thing you've pushed yourself to do that felt scary at first, but changed you for the better?
