WHAT MOVING FROM LONDON TO THE US TAUGHT ME
Three years ago, I left London, my home for my entire life, and moved to the US.
First LA. Then New York.
Two cities I’d only ever visited on holiday, and suddenly I was meant to build a whole life there.
I still remember standing in my empty London flat, boxes half-packed, the late-summer air coming through the window and the familiar London noise outside, thinking:
"What have I done?"
Has it been easy? Absolutely not.
But it’s also been one of the greatest adventures of my life.
Trying to get US ID when you have no ID to begin with.
Decoding the US healthcare system.
Opening a bank account and renting a home in your 40s with no credit rating.
Switching between British and American words (toilet? restroom? rubbish? trash?) and still apparently not being able to pronounce “water” properly.
Quitting my corporate career.
Retraining as an executive coach.
Starting my own business, and setting up my LLC.
Showing up on panels, podcasts, conferences, and really putting myself out there.
Plus the emotional stuff:
Living in time zones that make you miss family and old pals.
Figuring it all out as a team, just me and my wife, who works her socks off.
Making new friends and building a community from scratch.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
I’m stronger and more adaptable than I ever thought. And so are you.
Trust me, you don’t need everything figured out to move forward.
You just need to trust yourself and take the next step.
That’s one of the reasons why I do this work.
Because I understand the transitions, the reinventions, the “who am I becoming?” moments women in music experience every day.
If you’re navigating your own next step and don’t want to do it alone, I’d love to talk.
