The EMOTIONAL SIDE OF MONEY

When I first met my wife nearly 20 years ago, one of the reasons our bond formed so quickly was because I told her something I’d never said out loud to anyone else.

I had serious debt.

The kind that kept me awake at night.

The kind where those debt consolidation adverts would come on and I’d break into a cold sweat.

The kind that sometimes ended with me crying myself to sleep.

It came from years of overspending, not being paid enough as a young person in the music industry, and living beyond my means on credit cards.

That was my early adult relationship with money.

Before that, I didn’t grow up with money at all. My parents really struggled. Money was often a worry in our house.

Later in life, I earned a lot more. I had a successful career and my lifestyle changed. I then lived in LA, surrounded by people with levels of wealth that felt almost infinite.

But none of that magically changed how I felt about money.

For me, money has always represented security and freedom.

That’s why I’m so interested in how money shows up emotionally, not just financially, especially for women in music.

This week’s Off The Record newsletter is about money mindset, where it comes from, and why it’s not just about numbers.

What does money mean to you?

And what kind of relationship do you have with it?
